Moving Tips

During Your Move

  • Arrange to have all your major appliances disconnected and serviced before moving.
  • Carry your currency, jewelry and valuable documents. Movers will not take responsibility for articles of extraordinary value. Take your personal phone book with you; you may need to make important calls during your transition.
  • Defrost your refrigerator and freezer the day before moving. Dispose of all flammables such as matches, aerosols, fuels and propane tanks before moving.
  • Ensure you check off all your items and their condition as they are unloaded at your new residence. Damaged or missing items must be pointed out to your van foreman at this time and listed on your inventory form.
  • Ensure you check your list of goods (Inventory) and their condition at the time of loading.
  • If your long distance move occurs during extreme weather conditions, allow your electronics to climatize before plugging them in at your new home.
  • Keep a copy of your contract (Bill of Lading) as most moves are tax deductible. See your Mountaineer Movers Moving Consultant for more information.
  • Method of payment-Unless prior credit arrangements have been made, your van foreman is required to collect payment in full before unloading. Final payment must be made in Cash, Bank Draft, Money Order, MasterCard, or Visa. This policy applies to long haul loads only.
  • Set up a specific area in you rhome for all items not ot be shipped and inform your movers of this area. It is not necessary to empty dresser drawers, but remove all fragile items and liquids.

Packing Hints

  • If you plan to do your own packing, start well in advance of moving day. This avoids the last minute "packing rush".
  • Leave one box open and label it "TO BE UNLOADED FIRST", for items you will require immediately upon arrival at your new home.
  • Extremely fragile items, such as glass, mirrors, and pictures, must be professionally packaged or crated by Mountaineer Movers to prevent damage and to allow proper insurance coverage. Ensure tops of all liquids and bottles are tightly secured to prevent leakage and damage to your items.
  • Pack heavy items in small boxes, light items in large boxes. Label your boxes bu the room that you would like them moved into. (ex.-Master Bedroom, Kitchen, Basement, etc.)
  • Label top and sides of all cartons with your name and destination city in BOLD LETTERS for easy identification.

Packing Material

  • Black Felt Marker-Markers are used for marking your packed boxes with information such as the contents of the box, "FRAGILE", "THIS SIDE UP", and your name. We recommend that you write all of this or the room name on the tape.
  • Boxes-We carry 2 cubes, 4 cubes, 5 cubes, picture-mirror cartons, wardrobe boxes(2 1/2ft sq), china boxes, and much more.
  • Sealing Tape-The best tape for this purpose is platic tape. Your rolls of tape should be at least 1 1/2 to 2 inches wide. You can purchase tape from us.
  • Wrapping Paper-You are going to need plenty of wrapping paper. Many people save and use their old newspapers without realizing that the ink on newsprint never thourghly dries. Consequently, the goods you wrap in newspaper are likely going to be stained and will require cleaning before you put them away. For items you prefer to keep clean it would be best to purchase bleached packaging paper. We sell unprinted newsprint at our Supplies and Rental Store.

Preparing for Your Move

  • Ensure that you declare a value of your goods for insurance coverage, otherwise your furniture will be released at 60 cents per pound per article.
  • Ensure your mover has the proper licensing and insurance coverage to preform your long distance move.
  • In selecting a mover, ensure your estimate is firm or guaranteed. Beware of "subject to increase" clauses or hidden charges. Ensure that you understand all the terms and conditions of your mover's contract.
  • Make your moving arrangements as far ahead of your moving date as possible.
  • Utilize Mountaineer's Notification Check List to assist you in your moving arrangements.
